One of the main stays in Avalon is the clock on the green pier. No matter if you are on the beach, in your boat in the harbor or walking on Front Street, since 1981, you have always been able to look over the Green Pier and see what time it is.
For the past few months the clock which sits atop the harbormaster’s tower has been covered up with a banner that shows the seal of the City of Avalon. Locals and visitors alike have been wondering what happened to the beloved timepiece and what’s in store for its future.
History of the Clock on Avalon’s Green Pier
The clock atop the harbormaster’s tower on the Avalon Pier in Catalina Island was a gift from the Rotary Club in 1982. This clock is distinct from the Catalina Chimes Tower, which houses the historic Westminster chimes gifted to Avalon by Mrs. Wrigley in 1925.
While the Rotary Club clock on the pier serves a practical purpose for telling time, the Catalina Chimes Tower has a longer and more culturally significant history. The Chimes Tower’s bells have been a cherished part of Avalon’s soundscape since they first chimed in 1926. They are known for their unique sound that according to Avoiding Regret “penetrates five miles out to sea”. The Chimes Tower and its bells have been the focus of restoration efforts in recent years to ensure their continued enjoyment by future generations.
